Globalizing a digital product encompasses two key processes: internationalization and localization. This process takes into account strategic business aspects such as marketing or customer service and is related to each market’s needs.

Internationalization

PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS

During this first phase, a basic analysis should be carried out to determine the funtionalities and features a user will need according to market studies. This study takes into account both the local market and all potential markets.

INTERNATIONALIZED PRODUCT DESIGN

The design of the product will be carried out based on the previous analysis. Aspects such as colours, icons, UI, abbreviations, etc. will be taken into consideration.

INTERNATIONALIZED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

The product is developed by taking into account the different features that each target culture will require.

QA AND TESTING

When the product is completed, we must perform a quality control and testing of the internationalized product (usually in English). If critical design or development errors are detected, we must go back before moving to the next phase.

LOCALIZATION

Localization must be done by expert translators working with their native language and relevant cultural experience. This step is key, as it will determine the success of the product in the target market. After completing the localization, a second expert localizer should review such translations to make sure that there are no typos, inconsistencies or mistranslations.

LOCAL QA AND TESTING

After localizing and reviewing the product content, a local QA and testing is required.

LOCAL MARKETING

The product is released and users provide their feedback. Such feedback should be considered for next versions, going back to the first phase of globalization again.
